What is JAFA?

The Japan African-American Friendship Association (JAFA) is an organization of private citizens focused on supporting cultural and ethnic groups in Japan. JAFA hosts a variety of events such as symposiums, presentations, and social parties in order to bring about meaningful communication between Japanese and non-Japanese groups. In this way we hope to disseminate a positive image of African-American heritage, culture and people, as well as other ethnicities. JAFA chapters are located in Tokyo and Osaka.

JAFA leadership

JAFA is headed by Darrell Gartrell, founder of Wisdom21, a business promoting cross-cultural communications. Gartrell founded the JAFA Center in Osaka, and is working to increase the organizationLs activities in Tokyo with other established individuals and organizations. JAFA is focused on launching a new and exciting beginning for members and friends throughout Japan and the world.

Our mission

Facilitate cultural, trade and educational programs aimed at deepening the understanding between African-Americans and Japanese.
