International promotion and advocacy of African-American business and culture

Darell GartrellDear Honored Visitor;

With the rapid pace of globalization, technological advancement as well as the ever increasing potential for continued global conflict, the need for cross-cultural communication has never been greater.

For African Americans, there is a tremendous opportunity to leverage the richness of our cultural heritage -- and substantial economic influence -- on a global scale. With this in mind, the Japan African-American Friendship Association (JAFA), established in 1981, provides Japanese individuals and businesses the opportunity to gain insight into African-American activities within Japan and in the United States.

A fundamental component of multicultural interaction is fellowship. Therefore, JAFA is focused on providing multiple up-close opportunities for Japanese to learn about African-American culture in both Japanese and English. For African-Americans students and professionals in Japan, JAFA introduces resources for the learning of Japanese language, culture and lifestyle information to aid in adjusting to life abroad.

These promotional and support activities are channeled through our chapters in both Osaka and Tokyo. As we expand our activities, we hope to build a large viable network of cultural, educational and professional organizations that will drive the promotion of African-American culture in Japan and throughout the whole of Asia. If you are interested in supporting this most relevant cause, we invite you to fill out our on-line membership form or drop us a line at: jafa@jafa.org.

Sincerely,

Darrell Gartrell
